All 22 Film Breakdown: C.J. Stroud Best Plays from Week Three
Showcasing C.J. Stroud’s best plays from the Texans’ 37-17 victory over the Jaguars.
A strong start to C.J. Stroud’s rookie year has Texans fans very excited for the future as Stroud already looks like a franchise quarterback.
The Texans rookie was named September’s offensive rookie of the month as he threw for 906 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions in three games.
This includes Sunday’s performance where he threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns against the Jaguars. I have chosen six of Stroud’s best plays from the game to break down using coaches all-22 film.
1st Quarter 8:47 left 2nd down & 7 at JAX 48
Stroud hits Tank Dell over the top of the defense with a well-placed deep ball for 46 yards on this play. Stroud was precise on downfield throws at Ohio State as he connected on 31 of his 61 throws 20+ air yards downfield. He’s shown that downfield accuracy is translating to the NFL on this throw.
1st Quarter 3:52 left 2nd down & 5 at HOU 25
This throw over the middle from Stroud is placed very well as he hits Robert Woods on an in-breaking route for a nine-yard gain.
2nd Quarter 11:50 left 1st down & 10 at JAX 41
This was Stroud’s most impressive rep of the day. With Jaguars edge rusher Travon Walker going up against a tight end he’s able to create push in the pocket, Stroud is able to elude it by maneuvering the pocket and finding a nice soft spot to deliver the throw. The pass is thrown perfectly as he delivers the pass as Woods is making his break outside and it hits him in stride where he can get both feet in along the sideline.
2nd Quarter 7:27 3rd down & 2 at JAX 4
Stroud is able to deliver this throw around the outstretched arms of Jaguars safety Rashawn Jenkins who is unblocked off the edge finding Brevin Jordan for one of his two touchdown passes.
4th Quarter 15:00 left 2nd down & 1 at JAX 13
This was an incompletion but is still worth showing. One of the biggest question marks for Stroud coming into the NFL was how effectively he could create out of structure? It was something he showed flashes of being able to do at Ohio State, but he was inconsistent in dealing with pressure.
He deals with pressure well here as he escapes outside the pocket to elude Travon Walker around the edge and delivers a great throw on the run to Dalton Schultz hitting him in the hands but he’s unable to haul it in.
4th Quarter 8:59 left 3rd down & 3 at HOU 32
Two Jaguars defenders go to Robert Woods running an out route in front of Tank Dell who appears to be running a corner route, but with no defender over the top Stroud leads Dell downfield with his throw which Dell hauls in for a 68-yard touchdown.
